December 13, 2016

The students are amazing!  When we first started personal narratives, they would write for 10 minutes and simply stop.  Now they can write silently for over 30 minutes.

All students are writing a personal narrative about a fire drill at school.  When done, they get a student editor and then enhance their writing on a second draft.

We will begin our final personal narrative assignment with a personal narrative of their choice.

Homework:  Wordly Wise and complete first draft of Personal Narrative for Fire Drill at School.

November 18, 2016

Students received their Personal Narrative #4 essay.  If the score was D or F, student must rewrite.  The higher of the two grades will be accepted.  If a student scored A,B, or C, then it was the students decision to rewrite.   Many student resubmitted.  A few did not.  The narrative will still be accepted after Thanksgiving break.

In class, the students have been demonstrating their creative and collaborative skill.  We are doing a jigsaw of several chapters from the Shabanu book.  The group decides how to present their chapter.  The choices are reading the chapter, acting out the chapter, pantomining, or slide show.   This activity is not graded to give the students a chance to practice.  Future similar activities may be graded.

No additional homework is being given for the Thanksgiving week.

May your family discover the blessings in your life during this holiday!

Welcome to my new Blogspot.  The old MsLeeELA.blogspot.com was "hacked".

The class rotates across three areas: Wordly Wise, Grammar, and Spelling.
Writing or reading comprehension is a daily part of our curriculum.

Students are taking a quiz for Wordly Wise tomorrow, Friday.  Then, next week, we will begin the Grammar rotation with Parts of Speech, specifically nouns.

The writing is focused on personal narrative and we are using the Lucy Culkin program.  The students spent a 1.5 months on this program.  We will continue the program.  For a break, we are reading a personal narrative called Shabanu.  Shabanu is about a Pakistani girl who lives in the Cholistan Desert.

Homework:
Study for Wordly Wise Quiz which is tomorrow.
